NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb (KNEP) - An upper level ridge of high pressure is expected to continue to dominate the weather pattern over the coming days with record heat possible as we head over the next few days as temperatures potentially surge into the upper 90s and lower 100s across the coverage area. Tuesday afternoon we should be looking at mainly sunny skies across western Nebraska with very hot weather expected into the day tomorrow.

With the upper level ridge firmly in control, temperatures on Tuesday will continue to climb with afternoon highs in the mid 90s to lower 100s across western Nebraska. Look for Southeast winds at 10 to 20 MPH that should continue to keep dew points in the lower to middle 60s, so heat index values could potentially reach to around 100° at times Tuesday afternoon.

Even hotter temperatures - and potentially some record heat - is possible on Wednesday as the ridge of high pressure aloft moves almost directly over the area. Afternoon temperatures for much of the area are forecast into the lower 100s! The record high for North Platte on Wednesday is 100° set back in 1946 and there’s a very good chance that record will be broken. We should again see mainly sunny skies on Wednesday with an isolated shower or storm possible by Wednesday night as a cold front begins to creep towards the area.

Temperatures will stay in the “searing” category again on Thursday with triple digit heat expected for North Platte and the surrounding area. A cold front will continue to slowly push across the area, so the forecast could trend a little cooler if that front tries to push through a little sooner. Behind the front, temperatures should fall to the near 90° for Friday and Saturday. Highs on Father’s Day Sunday could be a bit warmer before a more meaningful cooldown comes early next week. Chances for any rain will be hit and miss through the next 7 days with some small chances for scattered rain Wednesday night, Thursday night, Saturday night, and again Sunday and Monday.
